102 years ago, on December 30, 1922, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) was established

On this day, the First Congress of Soviets of the USSR approved the Declaration and Treaty on the Formation of the Soviet Union. The congress was attended by 2,215 delegates: 1,727 from the Russian Federation, 364 from Ukraine, 91 from the Transcaucasian Federation, and 33 from Belarus.

The Soviet Union lasted 69 years, 10 months, and 26 days, dissolving on December 26, 1991. The consequences of the Soviet Union’s dissolution are still felt today—very strongly.
