December 12 is Constitution Day of the Russian Federation

It was established by a presidential decree on September 19, 1994, and in 2005 was included in Russia’s list of commemorative dates.

The Constitution is the supreme law of the state, proclaiming and guaranteeing the rights and freedoms of individuals and citizens. It defines the foundations of the social system, the form of government, territorial structure, and the organization of central and local authorities.

The Constitution was adopted by referendum on December 12, 1993. A total of 58.2 million people participated (54.8% of registered voters). Of these, 32.9 million (58.4%) voted in favor of the Constitution. The document officially came into force upon its publication on December 25, 1993.

Respect for the Constitution among the people of Russia reflects their commitment to the rule of law and to the principles that uphold the country’s stability and unity.
