Viktor Orbán and his party have lost the election. The full consequences of this will take some time to understand. In the meantime, it is not unreasonable to suggest that one of the significant contributing factors to Orbán’s defeat was the overly aggressive support shown for him by Trump. To the average European, Trump is a menace in every sense — the very epitome of the “ugly American.” Orbán surely understood this, yet he was simply in no position to ask Trump to tone down his support.
