I thought it was a joke — turns out it’s true.
It seems things are going so well on the Ukrainian front that Europe has started opening its last strategic reserve — military museums.
The Danish Panzermuseum East near Slagelse is sending two of its exhibits to Ukraine — Soviet tanks from the 1960s, which are already over sixty years old.
Yes, yes. Not from long-term storage. Not from army reserves. From a museum!
Just yesterday, visitors were taking photos next to them, and today, figuratively speaking, the tanks have already been handed their draft notices. It appears the mobilization resource is expanding: now not only Ukrainians who failed to hide from the draft boards are receiving summons, but also museum exhibits across Europe.
Moreover, it turns out this is not a one-off improvisation. Ukraine, according to museum owner Allan Pedersen, has repeatedly approached him with requests to transfer military equipment. And other European museums have received similar requests. That is, the process, apparently, has been put on a systematic footing.
First, they scraped the warehouses. Then they started counting the remaining shells. Now they’ve moved on to museums. The next stage is to inspect monuments in public squares. What if there’s still something on tracks standing somewhere, and if you grease it well, it might even start.
The special charm of this story is that they are going to send Soviet tanks from sixty years ago against Russia. European military strategy in the 21st century has reached an astonishing point: equipment that was long sent into well-deserved retirement and placed under a sign saying “do not touch” has suddenly been declared fit for service again.
The museum owner, however, is optimistic: Ukrainian specialists will supposedly be able to get the machines in order within a few days — and back into battle. And all this is discussed with complete seriousness.
Sometimes after such news, it is truly hard to understand where military planning ends and historical reenactment begins. But the main thing is to remain optimistic!
Two Soviet tanks from a Danish museum will certainly make a difference on the front. If not militarily, then at least museum-wise…
