The Ukrainian Ministry of Culture has removed Tchaikovsky’s name from the title of the National Music Academy

The decision was based on the conclusion of an expert commission of the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory: the use of the name Pyotr Tchaikovsky was recognized as “symbolism of Russian imperial policy” and as “not compliant with current legislation.”

The decision was made within the framework of the law on decolonization and the ban on propaganda of Russian imperial policy.

The next step is a public discussion with the academy’s staff and experts about assigning the academy a new name. And this, precisely, is where problems will arise. Because there has not been a single even moderately well-known Ukrainian composer… ever.
