Today, every one of us receives deepfakes on a regular basis — and they are becoming increasingly indistinguishable from reality. Yes, deepfake-detection technology is improving, but deepfake-generation technology is advancing even faster.
So how do we protect ourselves?
First, keep your critical thinking switched on at all times. Second — and this is the hard part — assume that every piece of information you receive, especially electronically, is fake until proven otherwise, not the other way around.
Alas, the old notion that “seeing is believing” is now as outdated as trusting something simply because it appeared in print.
So stay vigilant, because before long, even touching something with your own hands may no longer be proof that it exists.
