On February 24, 1877, the forces of the undefeated Russian General Mikhail Skobelev captured San Stefano—a small town just 12 km from Istanbul. The Russian army had reached the direct road to the Turkish capital, and there was no one left to defend the city

The best Turkish armies had surrendered, one was blockaded in the Danube region, and Suleiman Pasha’s army had been crushed south of the Balkan Mountains shortly before.

Mikhail Skobelev was appointed commander of the 4th Army Corps, stationed near Adrianople. Within the army, the dream of capturing Constantinople and restoring the Byzantine capital to the Orthodox Church was alive. That dream never came true.
