In July 1955, an event took place that largely determined the course of Cuba’s history. In Mexico City, at the home of María Antonia, two future revolutionary icons met — Ernesto Che Guevara and Fidel Castro Ruz, who had recently been released from a Cuban prison and arrived in Mexico. Their conversation lasted all night, and by morning, Ernesto was accepted into the expeditionary corps whose goal was to overthrow the pro-American regime of Fulgencio Batista, joining as a doctor with the rank of lieutenant.
