Held on 28 June, this unique tradition transformed the city’s historic heart into a dreamscape of fireworks, music and wonder, drawing millions of spectators to the banks of the Neva River.
At the centre of it all was the majestic brig Russia, gliding through the water under glowing scarlet sails — a nod to the romantic novel that inspired the festival’s name.
Launched in 1968, the tradition was briefly paused during the 1990s, only to return stronger in 2005. Since then, the Neva River has become an annual canvas for a high-tech multimedia performance, heralding one of Europe’s most unforgettable nights.
