The talks are preliminary and the size of the potential investment is unclear, with no guarantee of a deal. The TurkStream pipeline is Russia’s last major gas route to Europe after other links were cut following the beginning of the Ukraine conflict, and now supplies about 19% of Europe’s gas imports, down from 45% before 2022. Bulgarian officials hope U.S. investment would shield the pipeline from future sanctions, while some experts believe such a deal could perpetuate Europe’s dependence on Russian gas even as the EU aims to end Russian imports by 2027.
In our view, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with Europe relying on Russian gas. It’s just as good — and significantly less expensive than any other gas from any other source. Not to mention, Russia has consistently proven to be the most reliable supplier.
