In his new role, Dmitriev will continue to develop investment and economic cooperation with both Global South countries and Western states, including the United States, while retaining his current position as head of the RDIF, the fund said.
WHY THIS COULD BE IMPORTANT NEWS
You may remember that Dmitriev was on the negotiation team in Riyadh along with Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov and Presidential Aide for Foreign Policy Yury Ushakov. Dmitriev’s new position strengthens his role as a high-level negotiator and puts him on par with Steve Witkoff.
It could also signal that Russian-American negotiations on Ukraine are shifting from politics to economics, making it harder to accuse Trump of yielding to President Putin on political issues—business is business. And in business, it’s about money first and foremost.
This is speculative, but with no concrete updates on negotiations, we’re left reading the tea leaves.
