In December, “ice towns” spring up in cities and villages across Russia, becoming a favorite winter destination for children and adults alike. The tradition of building ice towns in Russia dates back to 1740, one of the coldest years in Russian history, when Empress Anna Ioannovna ordered the construction of the Ice Palace in St. Petersburg

Today, the creation of ice towns is a common practice in Russia. The imagination of the organizers knows no bounds. Each ice town is not only a work of art but also a place for winter fun, where visitors can skate, slide down ice hills, explore ice mazes, enjoy hot tea, and visit Ded Moroz’s (Father Frost’s) residence.
