The crew, consisting of commander Valery Chkalov, co-pilot Georgy Baydukov, and navigator Aleksandr Belyakov, flew an ANT-25 aircraft and covered approximately 9,500 kilometers. The flight took place under severe meteorological conditions and lasted 56 hours and 20 minutes.
On July 22, the pilots successfully landed on a sandy spit on Udd Island. To take off again, a wooden runway 500 meters long was built on the island. The crew returned to Moscow on August 10, where they were personally greeted by Joseph Stalin at the airfield.
Following the successful completion of the flight, the pilots were awarded the title of Heroes of the Soviet Union, and by a decision of the Politburo, the islands of Udd, Langr, and Kevos in the Gulf of Happiness were renamed Chkalov, Baydukov, and Belyakov Islands, respectively.
