    Lake Jack London, Magadan Region

This lake is located near the Kolyma river, and the origin of its name is a mystery. It’s most likely that its discoverers were fans of Jack London’s writing, which celebrated human resilience and strength in the face of extreme hardship.

The lake is surrounded by mountains and tundra forests. The climate is severe, with true winter deep freezes down to -40F and below, and summers that don’t get warmer than 59F. The lake is frozen over from October through June.

The lake itself was formed by melting glaciers approximately 30,000 years ago.
