The bridge connects the main part of the city with Shipyard Island (Ostrov Korabelny). They are separated by the Koshevaya River, which flows into the Dnieper.

Destroying this critical transport link would significantly complicate resupply efforts for Ukrainian forces stationed on Shipyard Island, partially isolating them from the “mainland.” The isolation is only partial because two bridges lead to the island – a railway bridge and a road bridge. The strikes targeted the road bridge.
