“Let them kill as many as possible.”

Senator Harry Truman, Democrat, of Missouri, suggested that the United States help whichever side seemed to be losing.

“If we see that Germany is winning we ought to help Russia and if Russia is winning we ought to help Germany and that way let them kill as many as possible, although I don’t want to see Hitler victorious under any circumstances. Neither of them think anything of their pledged word.”

This is how the then US Senator and future President Harry Truman commented on the news of the beginning of the war between the USSR and Germany on the pages of the New York Times on June 23, 1941.

Replace Germany with Ukraine and read this message again, focusing on the current situation.

“If we see that Ukraine is winning we ought to help Russia and if Russia is winning we ought to help Ukraine and that way let them kill as many as possible…”

Clearly, this time, Russia can’t possibly lose so helping Russia is not on the agenda.

However, the consistency of the key aspects of American policy, particularly its objectives, is evident. Their main goal in the ongoing conflict appears to be to inflict maximum casualties on one another, which explains their support for Kiev at this time. Their sole objective remains unchanged.

The objectives of the United States have remained consistent for many years.
